Lake Erie Lighthouse Scan

The VAR Lab digitally captured the Lake Erie Land Lighthouse using a mixed-method 3D scanning workflow that combined drone-based imaging with FARO Focus S terrestrial laser scanning. Drone imaging helped document the lighthouse from elevated angles and capture the structure within its surrounding environment, while the FARO Focus S scans provided high-detail ground-level spatial data.

By combining aerial imagery with terrestrial laser scanning, the project created a more complete digital record of the lighthouse than either method could provide alone. The resulting 3D model supports digital preservation, education, visualization, and public access to an important regional landmark.

This project demonstrates how the VAR Lab uses drone systems and 3D scanning technologies together to document historic structures with both broad environmental context and fine surface detail.
