Penn State has published a new article highlighting VAR Lab’s digital preservation project with the National Park Service at Independence National Historical Park.

The story, “Penn State Behrend Team Works with National Park Service to Preserve Liberty Bell,” details how Dr. Chris Shelton, Remington Orange, and Alexander Fisher traveled to the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia to capture high-resolution digital scans of the Liberty Bell and its mount.

Using laser-line scanning, LiDAR, structured-light scanning, and photogrammetry, the team is developing a 1:1 digital twin of the Bell and its surrounding exhibit space. This data can support future conservation, restoration, education, accessibility, and immersive public engagement.

The article also highlights how the scans reveal details that are difficult to see during a normal visit, including surface texture, pitting, wear, geometry, and views from beneath the Bell.
