Watch: Creating a Digital Twin of the Liberty Bell for America 250
Penn State’s News and Research team has released a new video highlighting VAR Lab’s work with the National Park Service to digitally preserve the Liberty Bell for America’s 250th anniversary.
The video, “America 250: Creating a Digital Twin of the Liberty Bell,” features the Penn State Behrend team’s use of advanced 3D imaging technology to create a permanent digital record of the Liberty Bell and its mount. Led by Dr. Christopher Shelton, director of the Virtual/Augmented Reality Lab at Penn State Behrend, the project used laser-line scanning, LiDAR, structured-light scanning, and photogrammetry to capture the Bell with exceptional precision.
This digital twin will support future preservation, research, restoration, education, accessibility, and immersive public engagement. It also opens the door for people around the world to experience the Liberty Bell in virtual spaces, including those who may never be able to visit Independence National Historical Park in person.
