VAR Lab’s Liberty Bell Digital Twin Project was featured in The Spatial Heritage Review, highlighting how Penn State Behrend faculty and student researchers captured one of America’s most recognized historic objects and released the results publicly.

Written as a guest post by Dr. Christopher Shelton, the article explains how VAR Lab used 3D scanning, photogrammetry, digital twin tools, immersive media, and structured-light scanning to document the Liberty Bell and Liberty Bell Center. The project produced downloadable 3D models, Matterport virtual tours, and additional immersive media now in development, including Gaussian splats, VR180, stereoscopic 3D/360, and 360 experiences.

The feature emphasizes the project’s central goal: making high-quality digital heritage data accessible to students, researchers, educators, and the public.
