Project Description

During the Fall 2022 semester, VAR Studios and Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) collaborated to host a 3D Scanning Roadshow event at the Penn State Behrend campus. The event welcomed Behrend faculty, staff, and students to the Merwin 214 lab space, where they could participate in and experience the 3D creation process firsthand. Some guests even brought in their own personal objects to be scanned.

The primary hardware used during the event included three Artec structured light scanners, with two coming from VAR Studio’s inventory and one from TLT, and a number of iPad-based LiDAR scanners. Various Behrend departments contributed fascinating items to be scanned, such as a several millennia old cuneiform tablet, a Hammermill metal stamp, a Hammermill paper roller from the Behrend archives, and a replica dinosaur head and fossil specimens from the geography department.

This roadshow event aimed to introduce the 3D asset creation process and showcase the production capabilities of VAR Studios on the Behrend campus. Check out the models created during this event at the VAR Lab’s Sketchfab gallery.

This event was just one of several creation workshops hosted by VAR Studios on the Behrend campus, including the AR Creation Workshop held during Fall 2022. Stay tuned for upcoming events in this series.
